The consultation document states the reason for closure is that " through traffic has a detrimental impact on the ambience of the street for residents". You couldn't make it up! Since when is the "ambience" of a few has become more important that the need of thousands of people to get to work on time, or children to get to school? Or the buses to run on schedule, or our right not to breathe extra traffic fumes in the already polluted part of London? Or the stress levels of people stuck on buses and cars for up to 45 minutes to go a couple of miles? I doubt they are feeling "the ambience", probably rather incandescent with rage! I thought it could only happen in Victorian England, where peasants didn't matter, and not in one of the most vibrant and muilticultural cities in the 21st century. |
