Phil The Conservative Party as a major national party was quite right to run candidates in every ward. It is not the Conservative Party's fault that its candidates polled well in Isleworth, Syon and Brentford and will emerge as the main challengers to Labour next time round. Maybe you should blame the electorate for that ! It was completely unrealistic of you to expect that the Conservatives would not run candidates in every ward in exchange for some deal with the Community Group. The Conservative General Election campaign and success at constituency and national level no doubt assisted the Conservative candidates in Isleworth and Syon and the reverse is also true. The Conservative campaign in Isleworth and Syon helped Mary Macleod MP get elected. The incoming Labour administration in Hounslow will have to work within the constraints imposed by the Conservative led Government which will of course be imposing major cost savings throughout the public sector. The Conservative group of councillors form the only coherent and elected Opposition to Labour in Hounslow and are therefore bound to benefit by the inevitable unpopularity of the Feltham and Heston dominated Labour administration. For the next four years, Hounslow Council will be run by Labour in opposition to the Conservatives. Other parties including the Lib Dems will be on the outside looking in. |
