George Your recollection is correct. The two options left on the table were coalition with the Conservatives or continued opposition through which we would have no vehicle through which to realise our community empowerment programme. That said, I am not sure whether there would have been an appetite on the part of our members to go into coalition with Labour even if the option had been available. Labour had just badly lost an election and it would have been difficult to justify propping up a regime that had just been voted out of office. Possibly a radical change of heart on resident involvement might have given us food for thought, but that was never going to happen and in any event four years down the line is only of interest to the historians. At least this time there will be no time wasted in deciding which Group will form an administration. Who will emerge as Leader though is another matter entirely. The Mayoralty will be hotly contested too and I would expect the new policy of sharing the office rather than it being the sole preserve of the party in power to be shelved. |
