"The Conservatives polled well in Isleworth, Syon and Brentford and next time around may mount a really credible challenge to Labour in all 3 wards." David If this was the long-term thinking behind the act of political genius which put Labour back in office for four years I'm sorry to have to burst your bubble. Trust me the scenario of which you speak is not going to happen. Voters who turn out for local elections under normal conditions will stick by the ICG if we decide to run again, as indeed they did this time around (our vote held out very well indeed by comparison with other independents, actually increasing in one case by over 500 and coming within 78 votes of holding a seat, as opposed to indies elsewhere being relegated to fourth place with about 14% of the vote). If we decide not to run again it will be because we feel the existing Labour councillors have done a good job in engaging with the community. In a nutshell, if Labour do it for the community they win. If they don't, we win. Either way the Tories do not get a look in. In the meantime we have a Labour authority. With respect, you should concentrate on explaining how that came about to your supporters rather than hovering like vultures over the body of a powerful community organisation that is perfectly intact and has no intention of shaking off its mortal coil anytime soon. In short, you got nothing but four years of Labour for your troubles. Hope it was worth it. |
