The other area in which I would be interested to know the new administration's plans is Housing. Allegations were made on this forum over a period of years that I and my ICG colleagues were planning to sell off the borough's housing stock, even though it must have been obvious that had we wished to do so we were unlikely to have been held back by our coalition partners and would have done the dirty deed during the term of the last administration. These allegations resurfaced during the election campaign, with a letter circulated by a resident supporting the Labour team untruthfully claiming to have been at an an ICG meeting at which plans for a sell-off were alleged to have been discussed. The claim was a complete fabrication. The fact is that as Lead Member for Housing I made it abundantly clear from the off that I did not favour selling off local authority housing stock, and that remains my firm position today. However the inescapable fact is that both the Conservatives and Labour nationally are looking increasingly to stock transfer as their favoured option, and pressure on or incentives to local authorities to travel this route will almost certainly intensify. It would be reassuring therefore if the new administration could provide some assurances that it will defend our social housing tenants and not pursue the option of flogging off our housing stock. |
