Vanessa I am genuinely pleased you think it was us lying down with the dogs rather than the Tories! However if your theory is correct it doesn't explain why other independent councillors - namely John Connelly, Peter Hills and Linda Nakamura, all of them very hard-working and experienced councillors - were defeated much more heavily than we were. By comparison with theirs our result was close. My guess is that the ICG did lose some votes to Labour for having been in coalition with the Conservatives, but gained a few from Conservative-inclined voters for the same reason. Our anger with the Conservatives is down to the fact that at a time when the result was always going to be out of the ordinary due to a hugely increased turnout they considered the ICG losing Isleworth and Syon and the coalition thereby losing the council to be a price worth paying for the prestige of fielding a slate of disinterested candidates in both wards. "Idiots" doesn't even come close. |
