Work purposes include actually getting to the office. I work with people (on the slightly tarnished gilt mile) who have to leave home at 0430 in the morning to be in the office for 0600- because they rely on public transport. They tend to get a car as soon as they can. It seems to me that the council has come up with yet another wizard wheeze to raise money- but which will actually just result in businesses deciding to take their offices elsewhere. Why would anyone set up here if they knew the council would demand tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds for car parking spaces? Why would they decide to move somewhere where the available workforce would be reduced to people who live close enough to a train station or a decent bus service to get there? They'd just pick Reading instead. Hounslow will just end up being a series of blocks of flats with no work. I've heard many promises about improved public transport removing the need for cars. It's yet to happen. |
