And it's an absurd policy Lorne, you shouldn't need someone to be physically in an office to know whether they've performing effectively or not. Companies that have such policies clearly either don't have any confidence in their employees or have an entirely ineffective management structure. It's still a source of bemusement to me also why employees seem content to commute and spend hours every week in their cars or crushed like sardines in a train or tube carriage/tin-can, to me not having to commute is one of the biggest benefits of working from home. As for having an office at home, nowadays for many people they hot-desk at offices anyway, so all they have is a laptop and a screen. You don't need alot of space in a house for that. I have more, I admit, a desktop PC, 2 screens, a printer/scanner etc, but my 'office' takes up about 2 metes x 2 metres in a corner of our living room. I have more space here than I did at the last office I worked in. Of course as Vanessa rightly says there are many jobs that aren't appropriate for working from home, but there's an awful lot that could be done from home. It's exactly the same with car ownership in London, in a significant number of cases it's a choice rather than a necessity, and unfortunately because the world is becoming increasingly overcrowded and us selfish humans aren't looking after it, that choice needs to be restricted. |
