Yes. Businesses win because they will realise that there is no necessity to provide expensive workplace parking (a very heavy expense before any levy) plus their goods will move more freely because there will be less congestion. They will be able to provide more facilities for visitors and customers and a better solution for the minority of their staff (in some cases perhaps a majority) who actually need a car for work purposes. Improvements in public transport will make their business a more attractive place to work for the 40 odd percent who live in a household without a car and the 90 odd percent who only have one car. Working people will benefit from less congested roads, better public transport and cleaner air. Taxpayers will benefit from the tax paid (!) and all of the above. I have noticed how central London's economy and employment has been completely crippled by the fact that not only nobody can park there but also they have to pay a congestion charge before they even think of parking. |
