I thought the comments about car clubs were interesting. We went without owning a car for a few months several years ago. Usage appeared to be very low as we always seemed to be able to get the same vehicle. Provision doesn't seem to have risen much but demand is up - the council do appear to be dealing with that issue though. As a general observation I'd say a policy which is focused on reducing car ownership is set to fail. My observation of younger people is that even those who aren't able to drive generate more vehicle miles than older people. They are so habituated to same day delivery that they get all their food and goods needs through online services. As this is often facilitated by a van rather than a car, the environmental impact may be worse. |
