Guy, you have sort of confirmed my point in your first two sentences. By conflating genuine concerns with the swivel eyed loonacy of those who leap on any point to bang on about cyclists you are veering towards trying to win the argument by making negative associations for your opponents. Just because Simon Hayes agrees with something doesn't mean it is wrong. Misgivings about bus islands are national and have been voiced by a number of groups which support disabilities including the NBUK. The issue is primarily about how people feel when using public transport and many feel considerably less safe particularly the elderly and the disabled. You may try quoting figures at them that you can't find any evidence of people being injured at these stops but that isn't likely to persuade many that there is no risk. Perception of risk and actual risk can differ but the feeling of being unsafe is real. This is going to discourage a lot of people from using buses with the result that they will either drive or become more socially isolated. Active Travel is only to a small degree about cycling and it is particularly important for these disadvantaged groups. |
