The problem with many 'heritage groups' is that they are either little more than a badge collecting exercise for the 'great and the good' or they do not have a toe, let alone a foot in the real world. I have seen thousands of pounds wasted by churches who have had to meet the 'need' to preserve a single piece of timber (which was not visible except from scaffolding). Equally I have seen schemes praised which even the layman would consider to be verging on sacrilegious (ripping out box pews and replacing them with 'comfy chairs' so heavy that the two elderly ladies (it is always elderly ladies) who lead the church cleaning couldn't move them. |
