I am not here to promote Private Eye but the 'Nooks and Corners' column is my first call very fortnight and, yes, we are signing off the same 'hymn sheet'. I commend it to you. Nooks and Corners details the buildings being lost weekly right across the country, most often due to local government inaction or the amazing number of spontaneous combustion (for which read arson) events when an old building was 'in the way'. The column was edited for many years by 'Piloti'. Piloti was, in fact Gavin Stamp (who died in December 2017), a long time West and latterly North London resident and instrumental in saving many local buildings. One can only guess what his reaction would be to the brutalisation of Brentford. I am amazed that the Victorian Society (based in Chiswick) have been so quiet about the loss of Brentford's heritage. |
