There is a lot in what you have said that I am very sympathetic to. But, I also know that the planning system is weighted in favour of development and the current government have made life even easier for that to flourish. I think you were a tad unfair to Adam though, he does know what he's talking about and if someone is hinting at 'brown envelopes' changing hands he is fully entitled to put the record straight, after all it's his reputation being impugned. Hounslow has been looking at Brentford for donkey's years and perhaps we could have all hoped that after all that agonising something really exciting that reflects the people and history of the town would be the result, but we all know money talks. There were some really pleasing buildings (Barclays, the P.O. as you mentioned) so you would have thought some attempt at keeping some of that could and should have been made. Personally I'd like to have seen Ballymore coughing up for bringing St. Lawrences' Church into use again, a church with links to so many Brentford families, but looking at what Hounslow allowed to happen with Sarah Trimmer - perhaps not! Defending what we have is getting harder and harder - even in conservation areas, and I suppose it all comes down to having local councillors who will fight for these things on our behalf, however, the lure of money to fill the severely emptied local government coffers seems to be the one that governs their decision making so often. |
