This is an extract from a letter from Katherine Dunne, lead member for housing, which will be hand delivered to Brentford Towers residents tomorrow: "As you know, we are at an advanced stage with our plans to re-clad the Brentford Towers. However, in the light of reports that the London Fire Brigade and other regulatory bodies, we will be reviewing the fire at Grenfell and making recommendations, including in relation to insulated cladding systems. In light of this, the Council has decided to consult with the London Fire Brigade Service and other statutory services on the design and specification of our proposals for Brentford Towers, before we agree to proceed. We will of course, continue to engage and consult with you on this process." From what I've heard on the news, it's not so much that cladding is a problem in itself but care has to be taken both in the choice of materials and the way they are installed. This is also a timely reminder that fire doors are there for a purpose: I not infrequently see them wedged open. I've seen this in numerous blocks, private and council, including on occasion in the towers. |
