Thanks for those encouraging thoughts and examples Michael. We've all done a great deal of work, but there is far more yet to be done. We are not as badly off as you might think, compared with Ealing, as Brentford High Street is pretty well documented at a time of bustling shops and trade which was sufficiently picturesque to justify some of the shopfronts ending up in the Museum of London! We unfortunately have to struggle with anonymous officers within the Council who have been steadfastly resisting all calls for the creation of a Conservation Area. That is the biggest single hurdle, and meanwhile the historic buildings remaining are being systematically vandalised in a methodical, timed fashion. I missed the exhibition Justin refers to also, though I had taken part in the project. But it is viewable on http://www.publicbiopsy.net/ (messy to negotiate if you are as unskilled in screen manipulation as I am, but an interesting take on perceptions of Brentford, more than a visualisation of possibilities). |
