I still think the problem is that I very much doubt Council employees have had an average 0.75% increase in their salaries over the last 12 years, and personally I think both employees and Councillors should get the same % increase. Much as I've always had a good relationship with every Councillor I've ever engaged with, I've never been comfortable with anything that potentially gives Councillors more 'power' than Officers, because it has the potential to be abused, and weaker Officers feel compelled to do whatever Councillors tell them to do. As for the increase in social media, that works both ways - yes arguably it makes Councillors more accessible, but it can also ensure that things can be handled quicker, e.g. a quick email, whereas 30 years ago you'd have to write a letter. |
