Conal and I must have very different thresholds for disgust. I found last nights meeting very mild compared with local meetings thirty and forty years ago (though I must admit that I missed the first twenty minutes that appears to have been quite eventful from the transcript). I suspect the art of "doing" public meetings that are not restricted to the party faithful is dying. Certainly I can remember George Brown (when sober) positively relishing hecklers and demolishing them with a suitable put-down that got the crowd on his side. Likewise Keith Joseph in Isleworth Public Hall was memorable for his passion and delight in fencing verbally with anyone who wanted to take him on. I've seen people behave a lot worse than last night ! |
