Nigel Moore's dream for increased freight use of the upper Thames overlooks the fact that the use of the Thames above Wandsworth bridge has dramatically changed in recent years with the growth of rowing as a sport. The upper river is now dominated by leisure use which is fundamentally incompatible with freight operations. There is currently no freight operation on the river above Western Riverside Waste Authority's Smugglers Way terminal adjacent to Wandsworth bridge and to reintroduce tugs and tows higher up would create major safety concerns for rowers and our rowing opportunities could become severely restricted. Remenber that a lot of schools use this stretch of water and many rowers there are of limited experience. The navigational concerns over the reintroduction of freight will be far greater in the Thames itself than they will be in the River Brent, with or without the proposed moorings. |
