You are not going to need this information unless it is an emergency, but if it is an emergency, you really need to know it…

Our old “key hole shaped” stop-cock in the street has done the house proud.  We have a key on a long pole to turn it off, should it need turning off.

A couple of years ago it was changed into a new plastic box which apparently uses a different key, a black key, which is tucked inside the newer plastic box, out in the street ( didn’t know that ).  The old pole key is obsolete.

Thames Water are now going around changing all the old key hole style stop-cocks for plastic boxes, which also come with a key inside them, a blue key.  The black and blue keys are different, but are inside the boxes in the street.

The stop-cock with a black key needs to be turned until the water stops, the blue key only needs a small turn to close it.

Just spoken to a neighbour who also didn’t know there was supposed to be a key inside their box, and there has never been one, so they use a wrench……
