Domestic science was not taught in schools for very many years. 50 years ago when I was at school I remember my mum being horrified at being told to bring in a can of mince and some potatoes to make a cottage/shepherds pie. It was obviously in decline in some places then. I was horrified to hear a student new at uni just 10 years ago asking how to make mashed potatoes. All the kitchens were taken out of schools and they have been replacing them but it takes more than some teaching at school to recreate what we once had. Parental encouragement, help and support is also important. I think there are more different ways of cooking now and microwave cooking is I believe a lot cheaper fuelwise. Readymade meals can unfortunately tend to be a lot less healthy than meals made from scratch. Knowing how to make meals from scratch where you know exactly what goes into them is a good healthy way to feed your family. |
