As far as I know central government have provided councils with contingency funds during covid, no idea how much, for nothing specific but for local emergencies not covered by usual budgets.If so, that is the right thing to do.LBH have also done the right thing in this, but whether they should have to use this contingency money to do this is arguable.I bat for neither of the big parties and my feelings are that central government should at least top up the contingency fund so that not all of it is spent on this.The free school meals for so many will cease after covid,rightly so on balance if things get back to normal with incomes, but that has to go hand in hand with relieving many families from poverty and the best and most constructive way to do that in my opinion is to provide reasonably well paid jobs that have some kind of future to them. |
