If it is of any comfort - and I doubt it is, this week's 'Private Eye' notes in its 'Rotten Boroughs' column that 'Anger is growing in London over the current craze for 'low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) schenes which seek to reduce the number of vehicles in residential streets thorugh the use of bollards, planters,'pinch' gates tec. But traffic is like water - block it off in one place and it will find the easiest alternative route.' The piece goes on to say that in Lewisham 'the Lee Green LTN displaces traffic from wealthier east Hither Green to the less affluent, more racially diverse west side.Several formerly quiet west Hither Green residential streets now endure MORE air pollution and congestion. Reports of asthma attacks, respiratory complaints, long tailbacks and dangerous driving have surged. The Labour-run council planned the scheme before Covid_19 but hurried it forward as an 'emergency' response, claiming it makes it safer to walk and cycle. Many residents believe the reverse is true in west Hither Green.' |
