I think the concept of parks just being for people to enjoy and relax in by walking the pooch, or kicking a ball around with the kids is fast disappearing. They are now being increasingly seen as income generators by local authorities, starved of funds by the government's austerity policies, and frankly outsourcing has done parks and open spaces no favours at all. The question is how to impress upon our elected members that this pushing ordinary bods out of their parks for quite lengthy periods and the resultant damage caused by these festivals is getting beyond a joke. It also undermines the tremendous efforts of Friends groups who after all are volunteers and who do so much to contribute to maintaining these areas on behalf of local residents. Especially this is relevant in Brentford which is likely to resemble a UK version of New York's wind tunnel effect with all the flats being developed. What is interesting is that in a lot of the country in the recent local elections, residents and action groups made tremendous gains kicking out the usual suspects because of issues like this...........food for thought? |
