The recycling of ALL plastics is a great aim but councils really cannot expect their residents to have the time or knowledge to discern which bits of plastic are or are not recyclable (also it seems to vary by Borough). In order to get everyone on board and operating roadside recycling, Councils have to make it really simple for their residents of various ages, incomes and jobs but who, by and large, are not in the recycling industry. Yes, people can be educated to try and avoid buying over-packaged items but most lead busy lives and want convenience, a quick & easy life - they don't want and indeed in most cases will not take on a second job of a refuse/recycling labourer. The best most of us will do, is a quick simple sort out of food waste, paper, cardboard, tins and plastic and general refuse, thrown into the appropriate box or bag (hopefully space in the home for assorted bins and bags) which is then carted away for sorting by the proper trained people and machines. End of story. Incidentally are we still supposed to pull out the plastic windows in envelopes and plastic linings from cardboard (tissue boxes being one)- I've noticed many do not but they still get taken away for recycling. The LBH webside states:- "The collectors will separate out the paper from the card and store them in different compartments on the vehicle." Not where I am - pretty sure the entire box is up-ended into the paper section on the lorry - I try and watch next time around. |
