Anne As the concerned citizen that you clearly are what should be troubling you more is the possibility that the democratic process may be being subverted here. Ten people in a stretch of, say, forty houses, most of them probably of a value of £1m+, have suddenly found the urge to join a political party which is in the throes of an at least partial reversion to a socialist agenda. This includes one person who has indicated to us on this forum that she is not politically driven, and another who offered himself as an ICG local election candidate a few years back. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this in principle. If the motivation for this sudden influx is a genuine upsurge in ideological enthusiasm then fair play to them all. For all I know this could indeed be the case. But somebody more cynical than me may see this unlikely development in terms of the upcoming local election candidate selection process. Or to be more precise, in terms of local councillors whose unyielding support has enhanced the value of their properties needing to be reselected in order to continue to defend the unpopular road closure which has benefitted them thus. If those ever-so-cynical people were correct, then you may take the view that this would border on corruption. Then again, perhaps the most important issue is whether or not I know that such-and-such is a member of the Labour Party. I guess it is all a question of persepctive. |
