Yes, this is not good. Incidentally as Church St. has got a mention again. When the powers that be at the council decided to shorten the median strip at the junction of Dawes Ave. and Twickenham Rd., which had previously been lengthened to prevent illegal and dangerous manoeuvring into the oncoming traffic just to get out of the log jam. Several of us pointed out that they were inviting this behaviour to start again, and as night follows day it did. Then as drivers exasperated by traffic will, people started going to the other end of the median strip and doing u-turns to enable a left hand turn into Dawes Ave. There was doubt cast on this when I informed the traffic section who didn't believe people would do this. So now we had drivers going around the median strip from both ends, thereby getting access down to South St.via Worple Ave & Worple Rd. Clever eh? Their response? To put up CCTV to catch and fine drivers, great the council makes money but local people get traffic jams and more traffic forced onto local roads where children walk down to three local primary schools. Now to stop the u-turns the council have had to do a traffic order, which aren't cheap. I have pointed out to them that what they have done is created a huge and dangerous problem where previously there was none. The easiest and most straightforward thing is to re-install the median strip back to its original long length which no-one can dodge round. Problem solved, this was exactly why we campaigned to have this made longer in the first place years ago and the traffic volumes weren't as great then. The closure of Church St. has without a doubt had the most pressing effects on local traffic, we hardly need the council creating even more problems. Their excuse for persisting with this ridiculous shorter median strip? It is safer for cyclists? Go figure. |
