Interesting stuff, but I give little weight to stories like "Turned out the officers handling the listing and protection orders ALL mysteriously went sick the day before, but one officer tipped off the Gazette." - no doubt it made a good bit of pub gossip at the time. I've been in similar situations working for Councils, e.g. trying to get a tree protected by a TPO without altering the owner who could otherwise cut down the tree and build an extension, and the last thing me and my colleagues wanted to do was give any inclination to the owner of what we were doing. It simply doesn't stack up to me that numerous Council officers would risk their professional careers and reputation to take a bribe about afew phone boxes. But when people make such insinuations they never seem to think about that. In almost 20 years of planning on every side of the fence I've encountered very little 'dodgy goings on', yet come on these forums and you'd think most Council employees and applicants are corrupt. I'm not a particularly meek fellow but at the same time I'll always say that one of my biggest skills is being able to communicate with all kinds of different people, so it's not like if such dodgy behaviour was widespread I wouldn't have been exposed to it. Equally if something untoward was going on and I was unhappy about me I wouldn't hesitate to say so, and indeed that's precisely the circumstances in which I walked away from local government 9 years ago. |
