At the time Adam, It was the local authority who were responsible for enforcing and alerting issues to the DoE as it was. It was reported on the friday and over the weekend to emergency numbers at LBH and the DoE when the demolition trucks and equipment were being assembled ( The factory itself was cleared for demolition) This even involved a road closure with a police escort on Saturday evening. Which involved permits and traffic notifications. It was all deception but it transpired that several people at LBH and the DoE did know and did nothing. It's one of the great scandals and is actually used as an example in many degree and specialist courses worldwide. Similarly Ealing got caught out on the listing of 1o telephone boxes in conservation areas. At 6am on the day they were due to be protected, A Murphy crew turned up and clobbered each box with huge sledgehammers cracking the frames. Except a photographer from the Ealing Gazette caught them red handed on Ealing Green and the pictures were all over the Gazette and then the Evening News and Standard. Turned out the officers hanling the listing and protection orders ALL mysteriously went sick the day before, but one officer tipped off the Gazette. So here we are in 2016 and the same is happening all over again. |
