If you take a closer look you will find that the vast majority of flats purchased are on Buy to Let and very, very few are owner/leaseholder/occupiers. This is nothing to do with social housing. A buy to let landlord thus gets a deal via a local authority with a guaranteed tenancy and maintenance. In fact everything is taken care of. At the end of the chain. Most rents are paid via housing benefit. One of the main reasons that work on the site was suspended for so long was the lenders no longer being willing to issue buy to let mortgages without substantial buyer capital. You would be amazed at how many Police, Teachers, Doctors, Nurses and so on are doing this and living elsewhere. In fact, my daughter has done just that and is a teacher. If I were in such a situation, I would too. But is it right? Not really. |
