Robin, I have full respect for your commitment to Labour in Hounslow. If I were still working for Labour I would be inclined to work for more effective constituency MP's such as John MacDonnell or Steve Pound. Although I disagree massively with Steve's politics I have known him since he was my ward secretary in Northfields (Ealing Southall) many years ago and respect his integrity. Today is the 30th anniversary of a day of action I was involved in against cuts proposed by the then Tory council in Ealing. (Like today Children's Services seemed to be high on the agenda.) I was checking the paperwork we distributed at the time and am amused to find that the coordinators of the one day strike action that day involving NUT, NALGO, NUPE and NATFHE (my union in those days) were myself and Gareth Daniel - a future GLC councillor and now Chief Executive at Brent Council. I recollect that we forced them to back down on a number of the worst proposals at that time. I fear this is not achievable today, as Labour is occupying the same ground as the Tories did in those days. |
