Being on the "periphery of Hounslow politics" it is small wander Robin has little idea of what is going on with Labour locally. The decision of Messrs Ellar and Smart to jump ship from Feltham and Syon respectively is in accordance with the generally held view within Labour ranks that their councillors after May 2010 will be drawn exclusively from Hounslow, Heston and Cranford. I was amused on Tuesday night, outside the Council meeting, to be approached by one of the Labour members who spearheaded the campaign to expel me from the party several years ago pleading with me to stand again in Hounslow Heath to keep Ellar out! A falling out among thieves indeed! More seriously, a number of Labour members are concerned that their failure to select a single Muslim candidate in Hounslow, Heston or Cranford is a fatal blow, given the significance of this community in electoral terms. I find it unbelievable that Nisar Malik, who has become one of Labour's most effective and competent councillors after a shaky start, has been ditched whilst many of their incompetent members have been re-selected. If the General Election coincides with local elections I fail to see how the reputation and record of the Keens can do anything other than further undermine the electoral chances of Hounslow's Labour Group. |
