| I have to say I don't think that's a fair assessment Brian. The simple fact is that the pub isn't as popular as what it previously was, and in simple economics the supply outstrips the demand. A similar thing has happened with petrol stations over the last 10 years. Planning policies relating to the potential loss of pub and restaurant uses outside of town centres tends to focus upon loss of employment, because that is the only justification for their retention. They are not often regarded as community facilities etc. Of course I am a planning consultant who acts for many of the big developers but they aren't our only clients - personally however I would much rather see a site developed for housing than either a boarded up petrol station or pub. |
