| It was a sad day when John Young died and just to put the final nail in the coffin of the Ram Brewery, the deal to move to Wells' was signed the same week. I'll miss the regular brewery trips and will never forget the last one I went on. As usual the finale to the trip was the obligatory visit to the Tap Room (or Sampling Room as it later became). Upon our arrival we were greeted by John Young who proceeded to invite the whole party to join him for lunch. After a brief chat among ousrelves we came to the conclusion that lunch would put a substantial dent in our drinking time and we kindly declined his offer. Not put out by this, he told us to enjoy ourselves and simply asked that we leave the room nice and tidy when we left. Two and a half hours later we staggered out and that was that. The next time I bumped into him was a couple of months before he died at the Pope's Grotto. As usual he insisted on buying all of the regulars a drink and we had a very pleasant evening talking about the good old days. What a gentleman. |
