| Let's face it, ultimately the local pub as part of the community is really a relic of the past. Last time I had a 'local' pub was back in the 1990's when I was a student and I'd always be in the local (which wasn't a student pub but more a locals pub) watching the football on Sky because I didn't have it at home. So over the years in there I got to know everyone in there and we all become friends, going on trips, etc. But nowadays if you're interested in sport most of the population have satellite TV so are happy to stay at home to watch the game, or invite friends over. I think a fair proportion of pub trade these days comes from either people popping in 'for one' on a Friday evening, or for lunch on a Sunday. Personally, I think I typically set foot inside a pub at most once a month, certainly locally I don't actually like most pubs or the type of clientele they attract, which only adds to the lack of incentive for me to go to a pub... I guess I've been officially converted into a wine bar person :-o |
