I was speaking to a young man who had come down from...was it Hull?... to attend the Event. We chatted at the Magistrates Court assembly point.watching the soldiers. He seemed solumn..but very knowledgeable about the WW1..and the heavy losses of young "chaps and pals". It was after the Memorial service that I met him again. He was still solumn and then mentioned that his two (great>)uncles were listed on the memorial...the Sellwoods. Where did they live I enquired. He answered "above a pub called the Bunch of Grapes" He didn't know where the pub was located. Fortunately Janet MacNamara, the distinguished local historian was nearby..and she mentioned that it was once located at the bottom of Ferry Lane.Indeed there is a picture of the pub in Gillian Clegg's book on Brentford Pubs (page 59) I believe it then transpired that the two Sellwoods had not been entered on the Brentford Streets Map where mini "rose" labels are affixed to indicate where a fallen soldier had lived. So address details etc were taken down by..was it Janet again. So, look at that plaque again...those two "uncles" were in the Swimming Club!! I hope that the young man can be directed to this Forum thread..and see the approppriate pictures. |
