Tim, thanks, I knew it was the meridian for the Richmond Observatory, whose demise was as much about mists etc over the river as anything else. Kew lost favour with George III's offspring not least because they all had miserable childhoods there (or so they thought, anyway). Neil, no surprise, the difference being that strictly Syon is not a public park whereas BM and GP are. I had my roof redone twice and know how much that cost, so I can imagive the cost of reroofing Syon House!
