| The ferry can't operate without the river being dredged to allow it to become properly navigable at all tides. The jetties would have to be DDA accesable. That will add to the cost hugely. Dredging not been done here now for nearly 45-50 years. It will take years to dredge this section of river from all the silt and mud that has deposited. The cost of all that will exceed the cost of a bridge. The ferry would need constant annual operating costs. A well designed and engineered footbridge would need minimal maintenance costs over a long period. Lottery money exists for this sort of scheme as well as World Heritage grants and other funding. It need not cost ratepayers much at all. A bridge does not have to be a showcase of architectural engineering like the wobbly bridge at StPauls/Southwark It can be a two span simple design and as Kew Chiswick and Richmond bridges are all low fixed spans, The bridge need not be any higher All vessels already have to meet the tidal height clearances for this section of river anyway. |
