Lidl was heaving this morning. Car park full. Tills busy, and not long after it opened. Morrisons by contrast was quiet. Both shops have their place. Lidl fruit and veg is often quick to perish, but it is good for a lot of things, although it’s prices have crept up in recent ties and it can be more expensive than more traditional supermarkets for some items. The key here is giving people choice, which isn’t something those running government locally are very keen on. Shopping around to find the best value is to be encouraged and a bit of competition is actually good for customers and should keep the shops on their toes. Not everyone is particularly bothered about the provenance or tip-top quality of products (otherwise there’s be no fast food outlets anywhere). Lidl will flourish and Morrisons struggle on. If it goes then perhaps it will be replaced by a Waitrose, which should satisfy those looking for quality and are happy to pay the premium. |
