Chris, I was with you all the way until 'huge Labour deficit', by which I assume you meant 'result of global financial crisis' - and Tory governments have run and are running even huger deficits.
But if we want better public services, including cheaper hospital parking, we have to pay for it, preferably through progressive and redistributive taxation of income and wealth. Increasing personal allowances is a snare, as it helps higher earners more than those at the bottom it's supposed to be aimed at, and removing the income cap on National Insurance contributions would help. Capping council tax at Band H is also a nonsense, particularly in London. And then there are the multinational companies and 'high worth individuals' with convoluted arrangements in tax havens.... That should give us a few more parking spaces! |
