Hi Chris Don't want to move this thread away from parking charges at WMH, but in response to your response: - I'm well aware of the tax take higher up the income scale and equally well aware that NI is just another name for a tax that isn't saved up by the gvmt but immediately spent. - I'm also well aware that any rise in any tax will be favoured by those that won't pay it and not favoured by those that will. Make it a 'progressive tax' and add in a one liner like 'it's only a little extra from those with broad shoulders who can afford it' and you've got yourself a very undemocratic vote winner. As the fiasco over Mansion Tax proved, which wouldn't have raised a single penny for the NHS incidentally, everyone loves a tax that 'someone else will pay' and is quite happy to dismiss a £30k+ annual tax burden on a house like mine with flippant comments such as 'it's just the cost of a lunch' - Jacking tax up to solve problems doesn't work. It's been proven time and again, and yet it's such as easy thing to do that our more simple minded governments have tried it time and again. Brazil incidentally is the 8th largest economy in the world so I'd refrain from putting them in the same basket as actual third-world economies. |
