| The problem has been that Council services have often been of a poor standard. The tough bit is that local government employees are unionised and have a much stronger grip over the employers than in the private sector. That's not such a bad thing as many in the private sector get a very rough deal indeed. Unions do have a vital role to play, but it will need to be tempered. All too often, unions played too big a part in hampering performance and end up costing the employer and ultimately the taxpayer too much. This is what made in house unviable and outsourcing so attractive. I'm all for the operations coming back in house, the contractors and the web of holding companies take far too much out for too little in. It never seems to make sense that it makes a loss run in house but makes big profits for a third party. It should mean a better deal for 'coal face' employees and not cost the ratepayers. What it must not be is another gravy train for managers with over the top salaries and contracts and a sensible deal with unions. Get it right and it should be good for everyone. |
