Sarah, on the West Middlesex estate we had ours taken away as they were being contaminated. Generally they were just being used as bins, with bags of unsorted household refuse just thrown into the recycling bins marked for paper, glass and plastics. What was particularly galling was that we knew who was responsible - staff at a nursery which hires the community centre during the day - but because they were a paying customer the useless housing association that we have were not prepared to say anything to them. We ourselves told the nursery staff that we had seen what they were doing but they ignored us and just continued to dump their waste with impunity. The problem is that too many local authorities and other providers regard recycling as a box ticking exercise rather than an essential means of improving the environment in which we all live. |
