Ladies in booths taking the money in butchers shops was the norm pre mid 60s (possibly a bit later) and I think it was something to do with hygiene in that the butchers should not be handling meat after handling money (which of course is filthy). I don't think everyone washed their shopping when they got it home, I certainly don't remember my mother washing meat before cooking. Maybe that's why people were seemingly more healthy in those days. Hardly anyone with asthma (whereas now everyone seems to have it)never heard of salmonella until the early 70s, or E Coli or loads of other bugs which appear to be prevalent these days. |
