Great bit of research as usual Jim! I remember the butchers in Enfield Road very well. It was run by a mother and her son. The floor was tiled in black and white and covered in sawdust. The queues were always long in there because the butcher would carry on and on talking to each customer as he was serving them. (You could find out everyone business and hear all the local gossip by standing in the queue behind them!)After getting all your meat you would then go to the other side of the little shop where his mother sat in a little glass booth where you paid her. A couple of doors away was the greengrocers and coalyard run by George and his wife on the corner of Enfield Road. On the other side of Enfield Walk (Number 2) was the fishmongers, also run by a husband and wife. The entrance into the fishmongers was in Enfield Walk. We brought 2 Enfield Road in 1983 (for £35,000!) when it was converetd back into a house. Fran |
