We often find ourselves in discussion with our children about the freedoms we enjoyed as children to roam and play, particularly in parks and open spaces. This freedom is not open to our children even to the point that one of my sons and a friend were knocking a ball between themselves as they chatted outside our house and a neighbour came out and told them to go home and play in their back gardens. The lads were just talking and had a ball which was being lightly tapped between them at a distance of no more than 6 feet. Children, especially boys should not be out the front of houses it seems. I recently sent this link to my son as it was a typical playground in the area I grew up http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=2310 Gunnersbury 'had' a thriving fishing lake with all ages enjoying the sport. When I took food over to the overnighters around the lake there was a whole lot of old fashioned activity by the local children in amongst the trees - home made cycle trails and camps too. Has anyone checked out the established use of the tree area by the local children? |
