Travelling & parking costs issues are recognised by Macmillan healthcare experts. I found this article on the Macmillan cancer relief website (www.macmillan.org.uk): ‘Some days, I didn’t even know how I was going to find enough money to travel to hospital for my treatment’ – Mitzi Blennerhasset People affected by cancer across the UK suffer financially as a result of travelling to and parking at hospital. The nature of cancer and the effects of its treatment mean that public transport isn’t always an option for patients travelling to hospital. Some patients need to travel long distances on a regular basis for treatment, so the costs quickly add up. The Hospital Travel Costs Scheme can help those on low incomes, but patients and health professionals aren’t always aware of its existence. Some hospitals run parking dispensation schemes for cancer patients, but patients are not always aware of these either. On 29 June 2005, Macmillan Cancer Relief will launch the second stage of its Better Deal campaign, which will focus specifically on the issue of travel and parking costs for cancer patients. As well as a high-profile media campaign, the public will be encouraged to help us lobby the government and campaign for change. Postholders will receive further information before the launch by post. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact the Campaigns Team.
