One of the reasons that the Brentford Dock West development appealed to me when I was looking for a flat was the fact that it is not a "gated community". If you want to walk or cycle along the towpath you can cut through one of the roads between the canal and Commerce Road. There are waste bins and seating by the canal, paid for by residents as part of our service charge, likewise the shrubs planted against the retaining walls to the development. There has been occasional illegal activity spotted by residents, but the local police have always responded if contacted. Of course there are always those who throw cigarette ends and empty fag packets away, who manage to carry full containers of food and full beer cans but who suddenly become too weak to dispose of them responsibly once they're empty. Irritating but there are sadly adults around who will never understand that they are responsible for the mess they make. And I certainly wouldn't bet on it that it is only non-residents who contribute to the mess!
