I think the pandemic has revealed an underlying societal problem that has to be addressed. In the latter part of the 20th century we have become used to there being a solution for all health problems, either obtainable or just around the corner. So we've lost the familiarity with and habits of mind necessary to deal with constant risk and proximate death. We are unable and/or unwilling to contemplate difficult choices where outcomes may result in thousands of deaths. Since I started this thread I've seen more discussion about the options for the exit strategy e.g.: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-52183295 Which is encouraging. And here is a piece from the Lancet about the unintended health care consequences of the focus on the pandemic: https://www.hsj.co.uk/policy-and-regulation/coronavirus-response-could-create-very-serious-unintended-consequences/7027321.article |
