| Wow that's a long message covering many aspects Anthony. I won't try to respond to everything but I do want to say something about educational standards. The press (and the government) would have us believe that we're going to the dogs but the reality is a bit different. Pearson, the international education company based in London (and which also owns the Financial Times) has sponsored the Economist Intelligence Unit on something called The Learning Curve. If you're interested you can find it here: http://thelearningcurve.pearson.com/ Anyway, I find it quite fascinating but the important thing is the UK comes out 6th of the 40 countries compared - behind countries like Finland, SOuth Korea, Hong Kong but ahead of all major countries with the exception of Japan. There's a lot of analysis on the site - much more than I can really get my head round and much more than is appropriate to talk about here - but it's all thought provoking. It's fair to say there is little evidence of Michael Gove having bothered to read it. |
